1. How do I apply to Volunteer?
What are the requirements to be accepted as a Volunteer? Do I have to have certain
beliefs?
- Complete the Volunteer Form and supporting documents which include
signing off on a certain moral code. If
you are a local Volunteer, please visit our office
to obtain a Local Volunteer Form.
- We
require a Minimum commitment of 7 days working in the Home environment.
- You
must be 18 or older, or accompanied by a guardian.
- Teams:
communication by coordinating with the Team Leader. Team members will be vouched
for by their Team Leader, and will not need to fill out individual volunteer
forms.
2. What areas can I help
with? What will I do as a
Volunteer?
The main areas we need help with are landscaping,
construction, and baby care. We will do
our best to assign you to the areas you choose on your Volunteer
form.
3. What is the nearest
Airport? How will I travel to Loving
Hearts? What travel documents do I need?
The nearest Airport is in Entebbe and it is 45mins
drive to Loving Hearts. We coordinate shuttle service to/from the airport for
$25.00/UGX50,000 per ride.
Travel documents – Passport and Yellow Fever Vaccination
Certificate.
If visiting/volunteering for 3 months or less, you can
purchase a visa for $50.00 upon arrival at the airport.
For volunteers interested in staying longer than
three months, please inquire about work/visitor visas at the Ugandan embassy in
your home country.
4. Which immunizations do I
need? What do I need to know about
Malaria?
Please visit your nearest International Travel Clinic to
find out which immunizations you need to visit Uganda.
Malaria is not as deadly as most people
think. It rarely becomes life
threatening if you are treated within the first seven days. Your International
Travel Clinic will be able to advise you on prevention of malaria.
5. How safe is it health-wise to
work with the infants?
It is safe when you use common sense. Our staff have been trained to deal with
other infectious diseases and we operate an isolation room for such
circumstances.
6. What is the weather like in
Uganda?
The weather ranges from 25-35degrees C
(77-95 degrees Fahrenheit). Most days are
sun filled, except in the rainy seasons.
We recommend bringing at least one set of warm clothing and a rain
coat.
7. Where can I stay while
volunteering?
You are welcome to stay in our volunteer accommodations.

8. What currency
do they use in Uganda and what type of things will I need to pay for?
Ugandan shillings are the currency of
Uganda. $US, Euro, and English Pounds
can easily be exchanged for Ugandan shillings in local banks upon arrival. Also, most bank debit cards can access
shillings through local ATM’s (ask your bank for details on bank charges for ATM
withdrawals).
You will be responsible for all costs during your
stay except for one meal each time you work a shift at LHBH.
9. What kind of food is
available?
Local food is provided for lunch (mostly rice,
beans, other). Supper meals are your
responsibility and Western food supplies are available at local
supermarkets.
10. Is there a dress
code?
No tube tops or spaghetti strap tank tops, shorts
must reach the top of the knee. If you
are planning on attending any church services, you will probably want to bring
dress clothes to fit in with the local culture.
11. Is it safe to come to
Uganda?
Yes, it is generally a safe country to visit. LHBH itself is located in a quiet suburb of
Kampala. You must act with travel-based common sense
such as not walking alone when it’s dark, not showing that you have too much
cash, etc.
